When the Self Help Groups in Nepal were started in 2004, the participating men decided that they wanted to focus on animal health. The various groups of men were guided by "Barefoot Veterinary Agricultural Helpers" (BVAH). They would share issues of animal health, importance of vaccination, scientific farming, seasonal farming etc. By the end of the project in 2015 16 trained barefoot veterinary helpers provided skilled treatment.

Breeders in Moatize benefit from local veterinarian assistance

Training of para-veterinarians at the center in Mameme (Rato 2012)

Before the Moatize program was initiated, some communities had no veterinarian assistance whatsoever. In Mozambique, at the time being, the responsibility of veterinarian services lies with the breeder himself. Under these circumstances the program to provide veterinary assistance was initiated in 2007. Workshops to select and prepare nine local peasants for the tasks of para-veterinarians were held.

To realize this the program collaborated with the veterinarian businesses of the provinces and districts. After their training each participant received a medical kit and basic equipment to comply with the needs of treatment. To secure these supplies, the treatment is to be charged.

Because of the missing veterinarian infrastructure, the program decided to help with the construction of animal treatment facilities. Now the assistance is practiced by both, technicians of the livestock businesses as well as the local paraveterinarians.
